We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established insurance defense law firm seeking an experienced Controller to oversee and strengthen its financial operations. This role is ideal for a finance professional who understands the unique cash flow dynamics of insurance defense, including billing delays, carrier audits, and rate adjustments, and can forecast accurately within that reality.
The Controller will play a key role in helping the finance team operate cohesively, delivering clear financial reporting, insights, and projections that support firm leadership and long-term growth.
As Controller, you will oversee the firm’s accounting and financial reporting functions while partnering closely with leadership to provide forward-looking financial insight. This is not a transactional bookkeeping role - the firm is seeking someone who can analyze trends, anticipate outcomes, and help guide financial decision-making.
The role offers exposure to operational leadership and is designed with long-term growth in mind for the right individual.
Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, and reconciliations
Manage and optimize financial reporting, forecasting, and budgeting processes
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and variance analyses
Forecast cash flow and revenue based on insurance defense billing cycles and collections timing
Analyze billing trends, carrier payments, write-downs, and rate adjustments
Partner with firm leadership to provide financial insights and recommendations
Support and collaborate with the finance team to improve processes and efficiency
Maintain and enhance internal controls and financial best practices
Assist with system evaluation and potential transition of legal billing platforms
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Prior experience working within an insurance defense law firm (required)
Strong understanding of legal billing, collections, and insurance carrier payment practices
Proven experience with financial forecasting and reporting
Advanced proficiency in Excel
Experience using QuickBooks Online or similar accounting platforms
Experience with legal billing systems (e.g., Caret, Clio, or comparable platforms)
Ability to analyze complex financial data and draw clear, actionable conclusions
Strong organizational and communication skills
Experience supporting or leading a finance team
Comfort operating in an evolving environment with system and process changes
Interest in growing into broader financial or operational leadership
